THE STEREOTYPE MACHINE
On Race, Typography, and Social Authority
Jonah Mixon-Webster
Introduction by Keith Jones. Part of our Typewriter Talks series, this presentation by WPR Creative Fellow Jonah Mixon-Webster (StereoTYPE, 2021) explores the racialized implications of mass textual (re)production and the methods by which typographical designs enact authoritative forms to codify the linguistic and visual structures of race, class, and subjecthood haunted by the parallel technology of slavery.

- consider so-called “extra-illustrated books” : link : wikipedia
and books on subject, on seminar table
- Less is (or can be) more. Whether or not stereotypical (American) heart shape is used as format, it need not be treated as a bulletin board for many images and pieces of text. Two images in relation is/are potentially more effective.
Usage/deployment of text should be more considered, “designed.” - Pierre Vinken, The Shape of the Heart (2000) : N 8217 H53 V56 2000

- think in terms of series, rather than “one-offs” — and dropping in different elements, e.g., wireless trackball mouse, winter hat... The Euphoria pieces might work better as an animation, with the colors evolving.

The second season of the hit HBO show is a thing of beauty—a stylized, heightened, art-directed fantasia of a dark suburbia where really bad things look really good.
Naomi Fry, The New Yorker (February 8, 2022) : link - On Thursday, Patrick showed some variations around [adultswim] : link. Discussion of variations, also of designing for multiple applications, on different devices/channels. Could something similar be done for other shows/networks? Discussion also of typography, clean e.g., Helvetica or Futura, to complement not compete with visuals. Madison recalled Barbara Kruger, and some controversy around the use of Futura : link

Sarah (life after death)
- Tuesday, saw styrofoam brain stamp print experiments.
earlier blood spatter images bring to mind:
lithographs of blood etc micro-photographs, in various 19th-century epidemiological and other texts, e.g., several by Robert Koch (1843-1910, wikipedia): link (via ancient JM tumblr posts, linking to google and other scans) - Thursday, Sarah showed five body parts : brain (with eyes), lungs, heart, liver, intestines. There ensued some discussion about these components as characters (perhaps on legs?) moving around, looking for their connections/neighbors/rightful places. Five body parts in search of an author, so to speak. The idea of claymation came up.

Hadn’t realized how the Puma logo has changed over the years : link - Crits/discussions are more useful during process, than after (when it’s basically too late for anything more than a post mortem).
