Grandmothers Hand Collages

Since I enjoy working with these hand collages, l made two collages with my maternal and parental grandmothers’ hands. I also started rotating some of the photos that are in the petals.

Over Thanksgiving break, I have taken photos of my family's hands, such as my parents' hands and my grandmother's hands. With their hands, I have worked on more substitutions in these collage experiments.

In these collage experiments, I have played around with more substitutions, such as replacing some of the petals with photos on one heart piece.

Substitutions on Hand Collages

Throughout my hand collages shown below, I have played around with substitutions, such as replacing the heart pieces with photos of my maternal aunt and uncle in the Family Collages and photos of the celebrities I've met at comic-cons in the Comic-Con Collages. I have also played around with substitutions on my aunt and uncle's hands in the Family Collages, such as replacing one of my aunt's palms with my uncle's palm. For the Family Collages, I would like to take photos of my parents' hands and create more substitutions.

Some New Experiments

Based on suggestions from my seminar review, I have focused more on experimenting with the hands and heart by making some physical collages and a pop-up card, if I decide to go to a direction where I could create pop-up books for my project. On the first physical collage shown above, I have used gift wrapping paper for the heart and gift tissue paper for the background, since one of the acts of kindness is gift giving. Some flowers may also indicate kindness, such as bluebell flowers. Therefore on the second physical collage, I have decided to use some pink flowers for the heart, since I didn’t have bluebell flowers, and the leaves for the background.

Here are some of the revised Heart Collages that I’ve been working on so far. This time, I have tried experimenting more with the images to create a better connection with the quotes that are inscribed on these collages.

Based on a suggestion on how to express kindness through these collages, I have decided to experiment with my hands holding a heart for each collage. Now each heart has two images together, based on the images from the magazines I had before, instead of having multiple images together. I also tried to play around with type and color throughout these collages.

For my collage experiment, I wanted to play around with shapes and decided to put my collage pairings with quotes onto a shape of a heart, which is a universal symbol of kindness.

For this week, I have done collage experiments using random photos and quotes that would create a meaning to kindness. During this experiment, it was suggested that I would use photos from magazines that I had no investment in. Therefore, I have used photos from magazines that I was unfamiliar with, which was the “How to Spend it” magazines and combined them in groups of two, along with the quotes, to create a meaning related to kindness.

Revised Zine Spreads

Here are some revised draft spreads for my Random Acts of Kindness zine that I worked on over the weekend. Throughout the pages, I have enlarged the text and bolded words that stood out to me in all of the stories related to the experiences with kindness. I also added more hand drawings and have enlarged them on a photocopier instead of a scanner. On the front and back covers of the zine, I have used a rough sketch texture for the hands and forearm, instead of the vector line art style that I had before.

 

Quick Drawings

I have done a quick sketch of my heart symbol based on a small photograph of my hands shaped like a heart, which has lasted for about 10 seconds. With my sketch, I have enlarged the size to 400% using my printer and then enlarged it again at another 400%. Afterwards, I have traced my drawings digitally and added them to draft spreads, along with some recent experiences of kindness as the text.
